'Don't Stop Believin'' back on the charts
posted by Jas, 10/20/2005
Thanks to MTV reality show Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin'' hits No. 5 on the iTunes rock list and still holding its own after nine weeks on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart.
The song is pouring out of iPods and CD burners everywhere: "Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world She took the midnight train goin' anywhere". It's Don't Stop Believin', the 1981 hit by Journey that's No. 5 on the iTunes rock list and still holding its own after nine weeks on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart. What in the name of big hair is going on here? The MP3 generation, usually partial to artists such as Kanye West and Gwen Stefani, has caused sales of digital music to rise more than 300 percent in the last year, jumping to $790 million in the first six months of 2005 from $220 million during the same period a year ago. So what's up with Don't Stop Believin'? MTV, of course. The song's resurgence has been fueled in part by its presence in a key scene of the MTV reality show Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County. Bob Stroud, Chicago's resident rock historian and midday classic-rock radio host, says he has seen this multimedia spillover before among his listeners. "When there's a mental picture or image put with a song, somehow there's a deeper connection than if it's just being listened to," he said.
"Some songs do better than others, and that one has been reborn. The kids are singing it with us," said keyboard player Jonathan Cain, who co-wrote Don't Stop Believin' with guitarist Neal Schon and then-vocalist Steve Perry. Cain said the new exposure even pushed the band's Greatest Hits disc back on the charts. Sony is releasing a DVD of an '82 Journey concert in time for Christmas too. "I felt it was a special song," he said of "Don't Stop Believin'." "It had a certain innocence to it. It still sounds fresh to me." Apparently, the iPod voters agree. Full article.
An interview with Ross Valory
posted by Jas, 10/20/2005
Modern Guitars has an interview with Ross Valory and he set the record straight about the absence of Steve Perry
Modern Guitars: I am sure that it's been discussed a lot, but would you like to set the record straight about the absence of Steve Perry?
Ross Valory: Well, the band broke up after Raised On Radio. It actually began to break up before that with the leaving of me and Steve Smith. Steve Perry, we did reunite in 1996 with the Trial By Fire album, which was intended to be an album and tour. The tour didn't happen. And the record company, as a result, pulled the plug on the album. And we decided to - Steve was having some health problems, we decided to give it a while to see if he would like to continue. Which he declined to do. So, from that point on Neal and Jon and I decided to find a way to go on without him. At that point we engaged Steve Augeri and Deen Castronovo and we've been playing with that band ever since. Which is the longest standing incarnation of the band. We've had many turnovers in personnel. We're in our eighth year, so that's a hallmark in itself.Modern Guitars: Steve Perry showed up for the Walk Of Fame ceremony
Ross Valory: Yeah, that was a pleasant surprise 'cause none of us had seen him in ten years!Modern Guitars: Even the band didn't know he was gonna show?
Ross Valory: Unannounced. Even though Neal had been on the radio with a local team gently cajoling Steve to show. Apparently Steve called the guys back from the radio station and said, "Yeah, you know, what's going on? Of course I'll be there." You know of course, we still didn't know when he was going to show. But he did. And he was in fine shape and fine spirits. He had some wonderful things to say in a prepared speech after following Neal and I for the speeches. It was quite a pleasant surprise.Modern Guitars:Any bad blood between you guys?
Ross Valory: Not that I know of.Modern Guitars:Between Greg and Steve Perry?
Ross Valory: Well, when things left off, they were not getting along. But that's been a matter of like, what? 15 years? And regardless of whatever potential problems there were, you would think people would show to be recognized and to receive something that they deserve.Modern Guitars:Is it just a coincidence that Steve Augeri sounds just like Steve Perry or was that intentional?
Ross Valory: Well, the choosing of Steve Augeri certainly had a lot to do with someone who had the voice to fill that spot. It's certainly challenging. He does very well at it. The fact that he has a Mediterranean look and has the first name "Steve", and has a last name that ends in a vowel or ends in the sound "eee" has nothing to do with it. It has to do with his voice qualifications. Full interview

Steve Perry Goes to College
posted by Jas, 08/30/2005
MTV.com reports that producers had originally wanted Steve for NBC's new reality show. Thanks to Ty for the tip
"Tommy Lee Goes to College" was supposed to be "Steve Perry Goes to College." And that's not even the strangest thing about how NBC's new reality hit came to be. First of all, the show was actually the brainchild of electronic music artist BT, best known for producing 'NSYNC's "Pop", and the idea came to him while working on a project quite different than the fish-out-of-water series."When I was scoring 'Monster,' [Journey frontman] Steve Perry licensed us a Journey track and he came down to see the movie and fell in love with the scoring process. And more important than that, he started hanging out with us all the time at my studio," BT recalled. Perry was so fascinated because he had never been formally educated in music, which spawned a thought it BT's head one afternoon.
"I stood up on the soundstage and said, 'I have the funniest idea for a reality show,' " BT said. " 'We take a rock star and we put him in college. Picture him like failing the final in music theory class on his own song and doing beer bongs with college chicks.' And everyone was dying laughing and I went on for like a half hour. And, mind you, the film we are working on is blood and guts and people crying every day."
The next day, one of the movie's producers, Brad Wyman, shared BT's idea with the Creative Artists Agency. "They called me and said, 'We can get this made and you can be a producer and do the music,' " BT recalled. "And I said, 'Well, I don't even own a television. I haven't watched TV in like five years. They're like, 'That doesn't matter. Call Steve.' "
BT called the Journey singer, who was flattered but not interested. "He was like, 'Dude, there's no way you're going to humiliate me on TV. I want to learn some of that stuff,' " BT remembered. Full story.
